Hi fellow travellers! My first holiday on my own since I was 17, now in my late 60's and as nervous as can be to be travelling alone to Malta this summer. I thought this would be a good start for travelling alone as there are like minded people who for one reason or another are alone.

Has anyone else been to Historical Malta and taken the extension of 5 days to see Gozo?

Kind regards

Lyn

Hello Lyn and welcome

I think you will find the Malta tour is a relatively new tour to JY, have a look in the review section on here, someone might have something to say on there, and please leave a review when you come back they do help people make a decision. Please don't worry about being alone, once you meet up your NOT alone unless you want/need to be. I have my 10th JY tour booked they are great fun you get to see so much, and your looked after, the bonus is you get to meet some new friends, and maybe a future travelling companion, I hope you have a great time.

Cindy

Hi Cindy

I went t Malta many years ago, also went to Gozo, although it was not with JU, you will enjoy it as Gozo is stunning place, intact I loved it more then Malta, from what I remember the people are very friendly, I only hope things have not changed

Lake Garda is a magnificent trip. My first foray into Italy and I loved it all. I write on Trip Advisor and have received many helpful votes. The original hotel in Moniga was changed after we complained in 2011. Do not let Trip Advisor change your plans. Of the four trips that I have been on, I have loved each one for the sights, smells and fun that I have been treated to 🙂

Thank you for this!

I have just booked my first ever solo trip with my heart beating in my chest, but I sis it!!!!:D

I am going to Greece on 16June for a complete rest after a tough three years. Nervous does not cover it, it if I do not try now I never will.

Thanks again. 🙂

Two years ago I was in the same position as many of you, having lost my husband in February 2012. A had never travelled alone, or even for that matter lived alone. I am in my mid-70's. I found JY and other singles holiday companies through an internet search and booked my first holiday with JY. Why I chose JY - I don't really know. Perhaps it was the choice of holidays, no single supplement, connection from my local airport, it just felt right.

I was so scared a few days before departure that I almost asked my doctor to sign me off sick so that I did not have to go and claim on the insurance! Sense prevailed because I really knew that she wouldn't do it.

You are really "on your own" until you get to the departure airport. Unless of course you have someone to travel with you, or take you to the airport. From there on you will have as much or as little company as you wish.

Fellow travellers are there for the same reason you are - it is somewhere they want to visit. Whether it is for the sights, architecture, history, food, culture, you have that in common at check-in.

I am so glad that I didn't call off that first holiday to France which was in May, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The age range, which was from about mid 30's to 80 really didn't matter, in fact I booked another for September to Calabria and thoroughly enjoyed that as well.

I have two holidays booked this year - though only one with JY, simply because JY do not go where I want to for the other trip.

In my limited experience JY's tour managers have been fantastic. The second hotel was far and away better than the first, but the first was very, very good.

Organisation from departure airport - resort(s) - return airport is smooth. Everything is done for you.

All you have to do is choose - read any reviews on the forum that you can find - book - pay - turn up - ENJOY!!

If anyone wants to contact me "off forum" JY have my email address.

Happy travelling.

Hi...the emails all sound very positive about taking that leap of faith. My question concerns value...the price seems high to me but then I am used to more budget travel. Can people confirm that parting with the money is only painful the first time?

Hi Maxie,

Yes, like you I was not used to paying much for holidays. But, the hotels I have stayed in with JY have been 4*, you get a double en suite room to yourself, not the single room broom cupboard. Very often lunches are not included so you have to budget for those, snacks and souvenirs and additional excursions that are not included in the price. In the case of JY very often all the excursions are not included, but there other companies, equally good, that do include them.

You are also getting the undivided attention of your Tour Manager, and dedicated JY coach travel. All in all it might seem pricey to start with but in general it is pretty good value for money.

A warm welcome to you, I can understand your question, and I can well expect compared to more budget travel the price does seem high, this year for the first time in a few years I did send for a few other solo travel brochures to compare like for like the result is I am travelling with JY again this year my 10th tour.

When you take in the whole tour and what you get then I think it is well worth paying the price.

The long haul tours I have been on include, breakfast every morning, at least one evening meal (the welcome meal and drink) often another evening meal or a couple of lunches. Also entrance free to the sights, etc, sometimes depending on what terminal your flying from the welcome lounge which is a nice start. Coach transport and informed driver local tour guide fees, porterage etc....

The shorter tours Normally include breakfast/evening meal and most of the above.

More often than not the main rep flys out with you, and there is a rep to see you through booking in at the airport.

There are many things that the reps get involved in while away, from hand holding if need be, moral support, sourcing out extra excursions for us while we are away, and of course sorting out any little!!! Problems that crop up.

If I can help you with any other questions please just ask.

Hi there

I lost my husband 3 years ago and have been travelling with friends, but now I feel I can't do that forever. I have finally picked up courage to think of travelling on my own and don't know where to begin. Stumbled across this website and saw a lovely trip on he Venetian Rivera in July. Still not sure, but there are lots of reassuring messages here. I should take the plunge, but it's worrying. :s

Hi Nick

Well done for booking your first JY holiday. No need to be scared. You will be fine. All your nerves and worries will disappear as soon as you reach the airport and start meeting your fellow travellers. You will want to book another holiday on your return!

Have a wonderful time.

Hey thanks for the reassurance I'm going on my 1st JY holiday in 5weeks to America and I'm getting nerves and abit scared about it. I'm 34 and I'm not sure how old the other travellers are I don't want to be the youngest there n have nothing in comman with anyone! I've never done anything like this before so it's a big deal for me. The holiday is an amazing holiday which I can't wait to see the sights and to have a chopper ride over the Grand Canyon amongst other things, just I'm really really nervous you have no idea!

Nevours Liz!

It is perfectly natural to be nervous but remember you already have something in common with your fellow travellers - you all want to go to the USA and see the amazing sights. You can post a question in the Ask Your Editor section to find out how many, gender split and ages of those on your holiday. Don't get too hung up on the age thing - you will find that the old adage about age only being a number is only too true - I've been doing these trips since I was 31 and have found everyone to be welcoming and chatty with lots of laughs irrespective of age. The helicopter trip over the Grand Canyon is truly amazing but is only one of dozens of incredible things you are going to see - you will have a great time and will be looking for your next trip the day you get back home!

I've found this post so reassuring. I too am going on my own for the first time. I'm off to Canada on 10th June. My husband died last September and we planned to go to Canada when we retired. I've decided not to wait until then as I've learned life is too short.

I am nervous but figure that everyone else on the holiday is going it alone so if they can do it so can I. I'm going to get to grips with my husband's camera before then as I hope to take some memorable pics.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Hi Carole

Glad it helped, I hoped it would when I posted it. By co-incidence, I had to fathom out how my husband's camera worked as well for my first single holiday. His is better than mine!

I hope you enjoy Canada, JY will look after you very well.

Thank you Sylvia. Obviously the men have the best cameras. I wasn't allowed to touch it when Chris was alive.

Hi Sylvia

I'm feeling quite excited now. Trust the men to have the better cameras. I just had a point and press one buy my husband liked all the technology toys and tools. Hope you enjoy your summer
