Just over 2 weeks back from a wonderful holiday at the Safari Plains in Limpopo and still buzzing.

Ian gave a brilliant review of his trip last November and thought it may be worth adding to this as we went in what is their winter. Yes Mornings and evenings were cold but the daytime temperatures were really comfortable , and actually quite hot at times. For me, personally, this would be the best time to go if you suffer in the heat.

About 2 hours drive from the airport set in a very large game reservce the Safari Plains area had 20 large glamping tents which provided us with single occupancy and all the facilities of a hotel on a 5 star level.

I posted lots on FB on my return and ran out of adjectives and superlatives to describe what was the most amazing holiday.

The country, the safari's, the accommodation (including a coffee machine!!), the food (so much food!), the wonderfully welcoming staff who made you feel part of their family and the many extra little touches provided to make us comfortable and feel quite special. A hot water bottle and poncho in the jeep for the early morning trips and an electric blanket turned on for when we returned to our beds at night. Many more treats which I, (As Ian did), will leave for any future travellers to discover for themselves.

The time between our after safari breakfast and afternoon tea was mainly spent sitting outside the tent on the veranda. enjoying the quiet calm of the bush and the wondrfully clean air. Some of our group enjoyed the use of the pool, albeit somewhat cold, and sitting on the sun beds or in the bar area. Plenty of space to enjoy a restful few hours before the afternoon safari.

We were a group of 11, with one really lovely gentleman who tolerated 10 noisy ladies with great patience. We all got on really well and are keeping in touch.

We were lucky enough to see 4 of the Big Five (The Leopard is very elusive) and got up very close to many animals. Giraffes are so nosey and Warthogs so fast!

We had amazing guides and ours, Sanesh, was so knowledgeable from the animals, birds and stars to insects and poo. We learnt so much; who knew why poo was white and which animal ate it?

For me this was my best holiday every, absolutely no complaints, would thoroughly recommend, it was just amazing.

Hi Lin,

Sounds wonderful, I am booked on Sept 2026 tour.

Can you tell me is it true that you don't have time to change for dinner after afternoon game drive so no need to take any evening type clothes?

Also, the tents, are they very spaced out, I imagine them and not very close to the main building.?

Do you get an early wake up call by someone or is it up to us to get up early?

Sorry lots of questions.

Sue

Hi Sian,

Look forward to meeting you, I know there is another lady called Sharon going as well.

Have you read the other review that Ian made earlier this year, from what he said about changing for dinner, is the reason I have asked Lin the question and see what she says.

It will soon come round.

Hi Lin

Glad you had a good time and the initial review was helpful

Hi Sue

In case Lin hasn't seen this...

In another thread re the tents I said "The tents, at least where I was, were about 10 to 15 yards apart. You should be able to sit on your balcony and not be overlooked and your nearest neighbours will be friendly impalas and giraffes who may pop by from time to time.". I was in tent 3 which was about the furthest away and it was a 2/3 minute leisurely stroll to the main buildings. Perhaps a shade longer on the way back as it was slightly uphill...LOL

Re the alarm we had a daily alarm call at 5.00am for a 5.30am departure. Times may of course vary depending on the time of year and when the sun rises. I like a little more time to get myself sorted so set my own alarm for a bit earlier.

And as for dressing for dinner we didn't bother - it was straight out of the jeep and into the dining room. Safaris are all very relaxed.

I enjoyed the trip so much I am booked for the Royal Morubisi safari next month

The tents are a few minutes walk from the main building, a torch is advisable to see your way to the tents. They can either give you a call on the room phone or a knock on the door mornings, I took a travel alarm clock while some used their phones for alarms.

Hi Sue,

Sorry I missed your questions. (Thought I had set my JY account to notifity me with any reactions to my posts!).

Anyhow, looks as if you have had your answers but if you want anything clarified or more info' please let me know.

I didn't take anything for the evening and as a group we did not bother dressing for dinner as came in from safari and just wanted to go straight in and sit down together and mull over what we had seen. It was just a decision made by us all. However 2 lovely ladies did change for the final night and we toasted them both!

It was amazing and, nearly  2 months on, I am still buuzzing!

Hiya Sue,

ive been on Safari before, not with jy, we didn't dress for dinner, came straight from afternoon drive.

Do get yourself a South Africa plug adaptor before travel, my daughter insisted she had one that did all, but it didn't do Africa

That sounds absolutely wonderful — your description really brought the whole experience to life! I could almost picture the peaceful mornings in the bush and those thoughtful little touches like the ponchos and hot water bottles. It’s great to hear how well-organized and comfortable everything was, especially during the cooler season.

Your mention of the guides made me smile — knowledgeable guides can truly make the experience unforgettable. I’m curious, did you have any particularly memorable encounters with the animals that stood out from the rest?
