Hi Everybody

We all went to China in September 2012 and everyone, men and women joined in my survey: the results-

Airport and hotels, western toilets as you would expect.

On stops whilst on the coach and train, beware, the majority were the other type,

BUT look for the disabled toilet, this may be locked, ask the attendant and she will open the door and hey presto a western toilet.

The majority were clean, only at some sites were there no western toilets and a few were a lot to be desired, according to the fellers.

Always carry with you, toilet paper, wet wipes and some bacterial gel.

Don't be put off, and enjoy China, it was great!

Looks like you need to be 'flexible' to be able to squat where there are no Western type toilets! I wonder what happens if you are not able to squat - I guess just sit tight with legs crossed!! China is on my list of destinations to visit so I will make sure I am super fit before I embark on this adventure.

lol...at all of the above, sounds a bit like some of the toilets!!!!! if thats what you can call them on the Kenya tour, as a lady that has to go I got be the person who sussed them all out and gave a report back to those in the line, some passed on this when I said what was ahead of them no such luck for me. I always carry loads of hand gel, tissues and wet wipes and bottles water dont ask??!!!...

My best one so far was squatting if thats what you can call it behind the bush on safari I didnt hang around long there I can tell you!!!, my worst was a public toilet in Kenya!! lol...

Looks like you have tried them all! I am not as brave as you so not sure how I would cope, but I guess if the call of nature is stronger then one has to succumb and use whatever is available!

Hello Carol,

Thank you for the memories of Chinese Toilets!. I first visited China in 1994, with my late husband and believe me a lot of the western style left a lot to be desired and the ones on site well you soon learned to cross your legs and give them a miss!. One of the ladies in our group who had been to China earlier used to go in first to suss the ladies toilets and give them marks out of five.

I visited China September 2011 with JY this time there was a great improvement in the western style toilts but I was still not brave enough to try the others good job I had learnt to cross my legs!.

Please please do not let Chinese Toilets make you think again about visiting China the country has come on in leaps and bounds, after all CTs are part of your memories?.

Thank you Cindy for lol. Jaya you will love China its history and culture is plentiful and the people interesting .

Lillie.

Hi Lillie

China is definitely on my list of destinations to visit. Perhaps next year as I have booked the Nile Cruise with Sharm el Sheikh add on for next April and am thinking of joining the Kerala trip in October if it goes ahead. I am not a beach person - I love sightseeing. I will start practising 'crossing my legs' from now so when I go to China I will be okay!!

Jaya and Bob

I am glad I made you LOL...it was just a thought to take a cork, and on another note it wouldn't use much weight allowance so maybe we should all take one with us on a JY tour!!!!!

Blimey if we ever meet up on a tour we shall be wondering does she/he have a cork with them LOL..

Jaya I know where Bob is off to next ..where are you going on your next travels...mine is the new Florida tour..

House and got very excited as there was the old fashioned toilet system with a pull the chain LOL so little things excite me....

Hi Cindy

I have booked Cairo and the Nile Cruise with Sharm El Sheikh add on for next year and am seriously thinking of going to Kerala in October if this trip goes ahead - even if I have to borrow the money as I always wanted to go to Kerala. I was thinking of going to either Peru or China next year, but guess I am not fit enough yet to enjoy the adventures. I an sure you will enjoy your Florida trip.

By the way I can't seem to figure out how Bob or for that matter any men will be able to use the cork?!!

Cindy in the parish church where I grew up, there is an old fashioned toilet not only with a pull chain but with a huge hand-carved wooden seat - a previous incumbent must have been on the large side of things! Now don't get overexcited now! Perhaps it's time to pull the plug (or even cork) on this discussion!

Cheers,

Bob

The loos in China are certainly not good, leave a lot to be desired but .... Haven't we all come across some here that are not very pleasant. I would still go back to China despite the loos. All the hotels had lovely bathrooms and loos it was just when one was out and about. Didn't even think about using the one on the train. What an experience that was too.
