Hi Julia

In the brochure there is an item headed "Don't miss a word with Vox radio guides", which then goes on to give a nice little write up saying how they are "brand new" and how handy these devices are.

And yes, they are a handy little gadget, I was given one of these for the very first time when I went to Apulia earlier last year for use when we had a local guide. I thought it was great because I always find myself torn between straining to listen to what the local guide is saying, especially in noisy locations, (I don't have a hearing problem), or wandering off to take a photo opportunity. With these radios you can do both, but we weren't given them when I went to Uzbekistan later in the year. As there was 33 or us in the Uzbek group it would have been ideal to have had radios as, with such a large group, there was no way everyone could hear what was being said unless you were able to get to the front of the group.

I appreciate that not everyone may want to use one of these radios, but when I am spending a great deal of money for a holiday I want to learn as much as I can about the country I am visiting, that's the whole point of me going somewhere, so I want to be able to hear what is being said and

not all local guides voices carry over the group, lets face it, it's the local guides with all the knowledge we want to listen to, the TMs always seem well practised in shouting out their instructions.

How widely used are these radios now? It says "Many Tour Managers now use this handy system........", does that mean the TM has a choice as to whether they use them or not? And are they meant for the use of TMs only? I'm not quite sure what I am reading there, I can't recall a TM "delivering" any talks apart from on the coach or in the hotel reception when radios are not needed, or is that because I usually go long haul where local guides are used? I would like to be given the choice to use Vox radios on all my holidays so we can hear what the guide is saying all the time.

Hi Avocet,

First of all sorry for the delay in responding to this one, I had to speak to a couple of different people in a variety of departments.

In terms of how widely used they are - for 2015 the team have provisionally allocated the Vox Radios to about 80% of all Travelsphere and Just You departures that have been announced to date. Of those where the radio is not available, in the most part, it is a logistics issue but the team never shy away from a challenge so they are "working on it" - especially as we know that our travellers do like them. As for who will use them - TMs and local guides.

The team are working on a way for me (and our Holiday Advisors) to have access to a regularly updated list so when you ask whether or not we've allocated a Tour Manager, I'll also be able to tell you whether or not a Vox Radio will also be available.

But, knowing that you have an upcoming holiday with us I did ask the question and provisionally, Vox Radio will be available on the Land of the Dragon tour departing in May.

Kindest regards,

Julia

I am NOT aware that any TM has ever used one of these things on a tour I have been on, so what are they?is it something we get given at the beginning of a tour? How does this work?

Many thanks for that Julia, that news was worth waiting for. I'm pleased the radios are going to be quite widely available, I wish they had been available before now as I know I have missed so much interesting information for lack of being able to hear what was being said by the local guides.

Thanks for finding out they will be available for the Land of the Dragon tour in May.

Have a good weekend.

Cindy,

These are a new thing for us. We were testing them out on a couple of the tours last year and the feedback was generally quite positive so, where we can get them out to our Tour Managers in 2015 we will be aiming too. As I mentioned in my earlier post we have provisionally allocated them to about 80% of Travelsphere & Just You tours for the coming year.

The radios are lightweight devices where the TM or local guide will speak into a small microphone and their commentary is relayed into an earpiece. It means that the group don't all have to huddle in close to the TM or guide to hear what they are saying - instead you can be admiring the location, soaking up the atmosphere and taking those all important holiday snaps but still hear what is being said.

Avocet, not a problem - I'm just sorry I couldn't get the news to you a little quicker.

Kindest regards,

Julia
