Having never done a holiday on my own before, I have taken the plunge & booked a trip to Iceland in November. Now I'm feeling very apprehensive. Has anyone done this trip & are able to offer advice about what to pack, please. Just how cold will it be & will I need proper walking boots - just how rough is the ground etc.

If anyone else is going on the trip departing 15 November, I would love to hear from you

One of the Forum's regular contributors, Bob Gray, did this holiday (a new one) earlier this year and wrote a detailed review on 20 March. If you go into "Reviews" and scroll down (at the moment it is on the second page) you will find it. I think you will find it very helpful.

Good luck.

Hi Jude

Welcome!

There is a lady called Julie WB (also a first timer) going on this trip with you - have a look further down this page and you will see her thread and my response - she was asking very similar questions to you. I'm sure you will both have a fantastic time.

I went in March, so I'm not sure what the temperature will be like but, because of the wind chill factor (and it's always windy in Iceland) I would definitely take hat, gloves and scarf, lots of layers and a waterproof coat. (But the heating in the hotel is good so don't worry about being cold inside - one lady on our trip brought a hot water bottle but didn't use it!) Sturdy walking boots are a good idea - especially for the Golden Circle tour which you will not want to miss.

Happy to help if you have any other questions - I've done a few JY tours now and Iceland is right up there on my list of favourites.

All the best

Hi Mandy and Jude,

Mandy - Thank you for informing Jude that I'm also going to Iceland in Nov. 🙂 xx

Jude,

I'm going on the same trip as you.

Sunday 15th Nov from Heathrow.

I'm really pleased to hear that another 1st timer is going on their own.

I've booked all extra excursions EXCEPT the whale watching trip as I can't do boats. 😉

I'm really looking forward to this trip but also have the same questions as you.

What do I take? Advise from others - lots of layers.

I've got walking boots but may have to buy another pair as these ones hurt me.

I can't remember if Mandy advised me on this, but get some YakTrack grips. I will buy mine later.

Don't forget to order your Medical Card if you haven't got one already:

I got my medical card last week.

I very much look forward to meeting you. 🙂

Hi everyone,

It is my first time travelling alone as well. I decided to visit iceland as a couple of my friends have been and expressed to me how wonderful the scenery was. However, I am very nervous , especially going theough the airport procedures at Heathrow . I am too going on the 15th , and look forward to meeting you all 🙂

Hi Hetti,

I look forward to meeting you on the Sun 15th Nov.

I'm really excited but glad there are others going so I know I won't be on my own.

This will be my first holiday abroad in 16/17 years and the 1st holiday that I'm travelling without friends/family.

But I'm sure on the return flight, we will be travelling back with friends. 🙂

I'm not nervous, not yet any way.

If you have a look at the top of the 'share your travel tips' section you will see a thread by me called 'At the airport' which describes in detail where you go and what to look for. Airports are extremely well sign posted places. You will have a JY rep meeting you at check in to help you through that process then you may meet up with fellow travellers as you go through - just look out for the JY luggage labels.

I went on the Iceland trip with Mandy and can definitely recommend it. It is worth you gathering your courage and taking the plunge, I promise.

Thankyou for the advice Julie and Sally, really helpful. Has made me feel better already. I already have my insurance completed however I am aware I shall need a health card? Appart from warm clothing, a passport, insurance is there anything else of importance I will need to have to hand?

Thankyou 🙂

I've just booked the trip on 20 March next year (got too much going on this autumn), it will be my first JY trip but hopefully not my last! I'll be reading this thread, and the reviews that AnnF mentioned, with interest. If anyone else books up for the same trip please get in touch 🙂
