Hi,

I have just registered and would really like some advice.

My husband died 3 years ago in August, I am coming up to 52 and I am only just feeling brave enough to venture on holiday alone !

My nearest airport is Bristol but I've noticed quite a lot of the holidays go from London airports so I was wondering if any members are in the same situation as me and live in Somerset and travel to London or has anybody got any advice on a holiday from Bristol for a first timer?

Also are the holidays a good mix of ages? I am a very young minded 50+ but am happy to mix with all ages !

I am very nervous and apprehensive about travelling on my own,so hopefully booking a holiday with JY is the way to go.

I would be extremely grateful for any advice anybody could give me !

Many Thanks

Hi,

I live in Scotland always have to travel to Gatwick or Heathrow to meet the group. If I have to go down the day before I usually stay at a hotel near the airport and sometimes find others on the same holiday at the same hotel. We usually meet via the forum. I think the Albi / Carcassonne tour goes from Bristol, and not being too long may be a good introduction for you. But really, find a tour you would like and go for it. Bristol to London is a lot easier than where I live, way north of Glasgow.

I am sure there are other members who will also be able to give you advice.

Hello and welcome

I have travelled many times with JY far and wide, along the way I have met many people in your situation so you will not be alone. I am sure people who make long journeys will answer you question on distance.

Group sizes and age range can vary, if you have a date and holiday in mind ring the girls in the office or post on the editors board and they should be able to tell you age range m/f ration and group size.

From my experiences, very safe way to travel, people mix really well, all ages get on really well, if you want/need to be alone you can, lots to do and see you will laugh along the way.

If you have any other questions just ask.

Hi

Like Sylvia I live in Scotland and have to travel to London to meet the group. I, however, live closer to either Edinburgh or Glasgow airport. I have been on 4 JY holidays, with a 5th booked to Italy (same holiday as Sylvia) in September. My advice is also choose a holiday and go for it.

Hello Chezzer

Sorry for the loss your husband. It is perfectly natural to be nervous and apprehensive about travelling on your own for the first time, I nearly turned back and go home again on my "maiden voyage" until that is, I thought about how much money I had paid for the holiday, that was 15 holidays ago with number 16 coming up and number 17 in my sights but not yet booked. I don't think there are many first timers who haven't been worried about taking that first step, if they weren't nervous and apprehensive then I say they were very brave people. I have been on 3 short haul and 12 long haul and never looked back so I hope this will give your some encouragement along with other peoples posts.

There has always been a good mix of ages on the holidays I have been on and regardless of age everyone has seemed to get on well, in my opinion there is no such thing as an age gap, I would add that women outnumbered men on all of my holidays.

As for flights from London, a large number of holidays are either from Heathrow or Gatwick and I always have to stop over either going or coming back due to flight times but I have come to take that as all part of the holiday, I usually book through Holiday Extras and ask if they have any "undercover" deals which seem to have worked out well, others may

have other advice that would help you.

Please give it a try, I can't guarantee it but there is usually someone else taking their first step who will be equally nervous and apprehensive as you.

Hi chezzer52,

I pretty much agree with everyone else. My situation is a little bit different because i am normally the youngest (27). I live in Liverpool, so can empathise that it can be daunting having to travel to London. Sometimes there are options to travel from local airports. In fact in 2 weeks time i am going to Lake Garda but the flight is at 7.30am so i have to travel down the day before.

My advice is go for it. You have nothing to lose!

Hello,

I took my first JY trip in June to Berlin, after loosing my wife in February and I was a bit apprehensive before I went. However, but very quickly settled in with the rest of the group and had a really good time. Everyone was very friendly. We had a good range of ages in the group and our tour manager, Stephen, did a great job in organising some extra trips and bringing the group together. So I'd really recommended that you book a trip with JY - the biggest problem is deciding where to go!
