I hope some of you seasoned travellers can help.

In September I shall be going with Travelsphere on their ‘ San Francisco to Vancouver and the Oregon Coast’ tour. The last 2 days are in Vancouver, I assume the local shops and restaurants accept US dollars (remembering that the Canadian dollar is worth a little more). Do the shops price everything in Canadian dollars and US dollars?

Over to you fellow travellers.

Depending on the exchange rate there might be a slight difference in value. Hope this helps, but the Canadian dollars are much more prettier than the US dollars lol"Eileen wrote: "Especially if its a border city like Niagara Falls"

Hi I haven't done this so I'm just speculating but I imagine the Canadians, being a proud race who hate to be taken for Americans, might not be very keen to accept US dollars!!

Cheers,

I've only been over from Michigan to Niagara but there paid for everything either in U.S dollars or by credit card. Much as I liked Niagara I was glad to get back to Michigan cos things in Canada (especially eating) were so much more expensive. But then I guess it's a compete tourist trap. 😕

I used US DOLLARS in Montreal in 2003 with no problem and again in Banff in 2004 while on trips with Travelsphere. Both purchases were for goods. I had some Canadian Dollars but wanted to use some US Dollars that I had left from previous US trips. Hope this helps and that things are the same now.

As one who has lived in Canada and last visited in 2010 I would say take some Canadian dollars but use your credit or debit card if you don't want the hassle of exchanging currency. A lot of places in Vancouver will take US dollars but think how we would feel if we were asked to accept Euros. Canada is a separate country, they do not like being lumped in with the USA and I think it is more respectful to pay for things in their own currency. Yes it is more expensive than the States but the people are wonderful.......friendly and very helpful without being as gushy as the Americans.

I hope you have a great holiday. You will LOVE Vancouver!

By the way I asked my daughter as she has just returned from 4 years living in Vancouver. She says you should most definitely take Canadian dollars.

Thanks Jools for your advice.

I will get some Canadian Dollars as next year as I am considering a tour that incorporates North East USA and parts of Canada.

I have Canadian dollars left over from my trip this year so if you want a special deal ask the editor to exchange email addresses and I will give you a great rate.

Hi Sue Southampton,

Many thanks for your kind offer but I have bought my Canadian Dollars 2 weeks ago when the Money Shop were offering C$1:56, which is a shade better than todays rate.

What is your exchange rate???!!!!

Many thanks once again and hope someone else take up your offer.
