Hi Julia,

I am booked to go on the February Namibia trip. However I have just tried to order Namibia dollars through Burgess travel in Swansea, only to be told that it isn't possible to purchase this currency in the UK and I can only purchase it actually in Namibia when we arrive there. Can you advise me on this please? Will we have time and opportunity to visit a bank when we first get to Johannesburg or Windhoek and, if I wish to purchase a substantial amount would I have to order it before hand?

I look forward to your reply,

Best regards,

Bridget

Hi Bridget,

Sorry for the delay in coming back to you, I wanted to double check a couple of things so the team contacted our overseas team who have provided us with the following

Namibia uses the Namibian Dollar (N$) this is linked on a one to one exchange with the South African Rand. The Rand is legal tender in Namibia. But the N$ cannot be used in South Africa. N$ can also be changed to Rand without commission in Namibia, but the same transaction in South Africa will attract a fairly hefty commission (about 25%). If you are wishing to purchase currency before arriving in Namibia it is easiest to buy Rand as the Namibian Dollar is seldom available in banks outside of Namibia.

To summarise: Visit Namibia with Rand in your pocket, and make sure you exchange any Namibian $ you have back to Rand before you leave the country.

It's also worth noting that credit cards are accepted at most supermarkets, restaurants and accommodation establishments in urban Namibia (Visa and Mastercard are most commonly accepted) but outlets in rural areas are more likely to only accept cash payment.

Kindest regards,

Julia

Thanks for your reply Julia. I had in the meantime discovered just what you have told us in this post and have ordered my SA Rand. Hopefully my fellow travellers will see this thread and be aware of the situation too. Thanks once again!!

Hi

How is St Lucia looking at the moment. Is it likely that we might be

able to change to another date that is definitely going if ours is

cancelled. Being disabled makes things difficult in that I have to

let the insurance know as I have to pay a lot extra and would

have to if I changed holidays completely. I am a wildlife person

rather than cities therefore there are only a limited choice for me.

The one that I could manage and has always been my second

choice is Croatia and the Makarska Riviera on the 22 may, 5 june

or 12 june.

There are only a limited number of shorter holidays that go to

wildlife areas, they are much more city based. I would love to

go to a wildlife area on say a 8 day trip, perhaps Scandinavia

for instance. There must be others interest in that kind of holiday.

I know your people have been trying to ring me but my phone is

out of order because of damage to the cable and wont be fixed

until 24th Feb. I do need to speak to them as soon as possible as

there are special arrangements that have to made.

thank you.

Hi Sue,

I have replied on another thread but so that it is here too, the team have been made aware that you are experiencing problems with your phone at the moment. They have tried to reach you by email, and a letter has now been sent out to you too. These will include the contact details of the team member who is looking after your booking and I would encourage you to contact them directly as they will be able to talk to you about all elements of your booking.

Kindest regards,

Julia
