Hi

I haven't been away overseas for years. I was wondering if hotels have somewhere you can safely store valuables and money so I don't have to carry all of my money on me all the time.

Hi Joe,

The amenities at each hotel we use are different. You may find that some hotels will have a safe in your room, whereas others may have the facility to leave valuables at the hotel reception. When you book a particular holiday with us, we can let you know what facility is available at that particular hotel.

Kindest regards,

Julia

Hi Julia,

Thanks for replying so quickly. I will be staying at the Mijas hotel on the Anda;ucia trip. Do you have any information for this hotel.

Hi Joe,

Every room in this hotel has a safe. I understand there is a 3Euro per day charge.

Kindest regards,

Julia

Hi,

Please don't all jump on me 🙂 but personally I would never use a hotel safe, especially the card variety as there is no distinction between the card you are given for your door & the "master" card the cleaners, managers etc have so, technically there would be nothing stopping any of them using that card on your safe; even the numbered codes have an override so that in the event of an "unfortunate incident" (illness, accident etc) staff are able to clear out rooms. So my go to place is in my dirty underwear bag locked inside my suitcase with a coded padlock.... of course now everyone knows where I hide my valuables  but good luck delving into my dirty knick knicks:D

cheers

All the hotel safes I have used and there have been many over the years, most have been the four digit number keypad style to lock it, on the rare occasion it has been a key, not ever had one that's a key card, but thanks for pointing that out.

Hi I've stayed in dozens of hotels over the years and, as Cindy says, they usually let you input your own code - anything from 4 to 8 digits. Once or twice I've had a key but never a key card. I reckon room safes are the best option, but otherwise the underwear bag is probably a good way to go!!

Cheers,

Hi

Unfortunately the underwear bag is not an option for me as I tend to wash my underwear whilst on holiday!!

In a hotel, how unusual would it be to see someone walking out of a room carrying a suitcase? A determined thief will do just that, dirty underwear and all, lol.

Personally I usually carry anything I dont want to loose with me, if I am touring and leave it on the coach with is always safe. If staying in a hotel which has a safe I would use that too.. and in the past where hotels didn't have safes in rooms, I've left my valuables with reception to put in there safe.

Overall I think as long as you are sensible there will be no problem. If you don't want to carry around lots of cash - you can now get a prepaid card for your money - or withdraw money from banks (depending on where you go) each day. The world is actually a more safe place these days.

I lock my hand luggage which contains my valuables in my large case.

Sure not unusual in a hotel for someone to walk out with a suitcase but very unlikely for staff to do this as would take a lot of explaining as most hotels have CCTV.

On all my trips not yet heard of anyone having a suitcase taken from their room.

Remember the hotel that JY used when i did Austrian Lakes had safes in the rooms and inspecting them thy weren't bolted down, they were small and anybody could have walked off with the safe.
