Hi my names Eddie and i have just joined. I am in my 70s and I lost my wife 5 years ago. I have been going on holidays but having no company I find the evenings difficult to get through. In the hotels its all couples and families and when i go to dinner I feel I stick out like a sore thumb. I found just you on a web search.

Welcome Eddie.  One of the things about JY is that you are as alone as you want to be and as many holidays are half board,  evening meals are full of fun and laughter.

I hope you find a holiday to suit you but be warned JY is addictive.

Hi Eddie, welcome.  As Jonah says many of the holidays are half board - particularly the Europe holidays.  JY have tables allocated to them, often 8 or more on a table, you just join in.  Holidays outside Europe, when the evening meal is not included, the group tends to arrange to meet up at a time in the hotel lobby (often facilitated by the Tour Manager) and then go as one large group or in smaller groups to local restaurants.

If you have any particular holiday you like the look of, if you post again to ask about it here, there will be lots of advice.

If you haven't already asked for a brochure to be sent to you, I'd request this.  I notice you have also asked about the age range and you're in your 70s - most JY customers are 55+ (tho' there are some younger), and there are plenty who are 80+ who go on JY holidays.

Regards

Katy

Welcome Eddie:

Hesitate no longer!  I am also in my 70s but, unlike you, have not been used to lifetime company.  On my first long-haul trip (for many years) in 2012 – part of which involved a cruise, and with a large travel agent, I was on my own, amongst 25 married couples, but went armed with a supply of Sunday Times magazines which kept me happily occupied while waiting for and during consumption of all meals.

Only the lunches out on excursions presented anything of a problem and on several occasions, a couple or small group nearby would invite me to join them, though I still had a magazine with me, just in case, in my new shoulder-bag!  (John Lewis, black leather, perfect @ £89!)

Like you, I discovered JustYou and plunged right in at the deep-end with a 17-day trip to China and the Yangtze add-on, for what turned out to be “The Best Holiday Ever of My Life”!  I soon discovered the huge benefits of all being in the same boat:  it is most noticeable when you reach an excursion destination and you disembark the coach.  When the Tour Manager announces after his/her initial briefing on the area, “OK, please be back here in 50 minutes.....that’s quarter-past eleven”, for example!

So as you all wander off, mostly individually though a few might’ve have palled up, over those periods of free time you are always bumping into a familiar face with whom you can exchange pleasantries and observations on whatever one is admiring for a minute or three before moving on to the next, generally independently again.

Actually, on the very first day in Beijing, as we embarked back on to the coach, a lady several years my junior, asked to join me where I sat and we hit it off within minutes and have remained lifelong friends ever since.  I may have just been very lucky.  As was she, of course!  😉  But while we enjoyed most coach journeys together, we were never in each other’s pockets either at any sites or during meal times.

That first trip was such a success, that I went with JY the following year to India – hitting it off, even as we queued in the aisle to leave the plane at New Delhi, with another, male, friend – and again last year, to Peru.  But I did choose to go there with their sister company, Travelsphere, as three travellers on this Forum had recommended their trip over JustYou’s on both cost and itinerary bases.

I have already booked a nearer-to-home trip with JY within Europe for this autumn.  You may prefer something similar for your first venture.  But I concur with so much advice here which is to decide where you want to go first, then see if JY offer a near match.

Anyway, this is a typically ,long-winded way of reassuring you that you are sure to enjoy yourself.  You’ll also read here of so many who return for the umpteenth year running.  Good luck.

Hi Eddie

All I would add is pick a destination you always wanted to visit and book it. I can assure you that you will have such a good time that you would want to book another trip on your return. Life is too short so don't waste any time thinking, just go ahead and do it.

Kind regards

Jaya

Hi Eddie welcome to Just You community I'm in a similar position to you been on my own now for 2 years following bereavement and have also travelled on holiday alone. I completely agree you do feel you stand out like a sore thumb when dining on your own you feel like odd man out in a room full of couples. I've been on 2 Just You holidays in the past 6 months - my second holiday felt easier than the first one - but I have no regrets about going. Most people are friendly and they also understand how you're feeling - although not everyone may be open to you - I found a few cliques who were a little unfriendly - but don't be put off if this happens just persevere - there were many more who were welcoming than were not. I'm hoping to book another JY holiday soon. Good luck hope you decide to give it a try

Kind regards ElizabethF

Hi Elizabeth

So sorry that you encountered a few cliques on your Just You holiday. All I would say is that this is always in a minority as majority of travellers are very friendly. I don't let cliques and unfriendly people bother me as I always say that it is their problem and not mine and they are the ones who miss out by being unfriendly. Here's to many more happy years travelling with Just You.

Kind regards

Jaya

Hi Jaya good to hear from you thanks for your kind words. I'm looking to book another JY tour very soon possibly Chateau Weekend & Monet's Garden By Rail, Secret Lakes of Italy or most likely the Imperial Danube Wine Experience. Have you been on any of these tours? If so any info or tips would be much appreciated

Thanks again

Kind regards ElizabethF

Hi Elizabeth

I have not been on any of the tours you mention, but I am sure that whichever you choose will be good. I was browsing the brochure a few days ago and quite liked the sound of Secret Lakes of Italy. At the moment I am concentrating on long haul tours as would like to do them whilst I can. Just pick one and book it and then you can tick it off you list! I have a very long list and it keeps on growing as new holidays are introduced.

Happy travelling.

Regards
