I'm doing Route 66 in the 'fairly' near future. Is there anyone out there who can give me some information on the Optional excursions. Need to know whether to book before I go or whether its worth hanging on and booking when I get there. Also which ones do I book as I'm sure I can't do them all.

Anyone else going 8th September?

Hi did this trip two years ago and had an amazing time, however the trip seems to have changed a lot since then, with a different itinenary, as we didn't visit Vegas. I would say that Sante fe was worth visiting and the Grand Canyon was awesome

ENJOY

Steve,

Also did the trip in 2012 and have wrote a review on my "Travelling Solo" (its in 3 parts) and may give you an idea what you want to do and see. Think parts of the trip have been tweaked since then to make it more interesting.

Thanks. One more question.......is it better to book excursions before you go or wait until you get there. Don't want to miss one because its full or to do one on my own.

It usually tells you in your paperwork from JY which must be booked before you go and those that have the option of booking with the tour manager. Have had excurrsions cancelled through lack of interest so doubt you would go anywhere on your own (believe there is usually a minimum number required).

Also i cant recall anyone been turned down because its full.

I personally pay in advance then you don't need to carry extra money to cover it on the trip, just your normal spending money.

Lyds,

Weather should be fine in September in fact very warm in some places, suggest you'll need shorts. Daily tempretures could reach 70+ in Chicago and mid 50's on a night.

After that many it will get hotter along the route touching maybe 80 in the middle of the country (oklahoma).

One place where in could be quite cool is in Flagstaff on a evening, it will be hot during the day but drops significantly once the sun goes down because of the altitude (light jacket/fleece maybe).
