Hi, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on what sort of clothes I need to take for India next March. Would it be okay to wear jeans or would they be too hot? Would you have to have your arms covered all lthe time? I understand they dress more modestly over there than we do but would it be okay to wear long shorts or cropped trousers? Also what sort of clothes for the evening? Sorry about all the questions but I'm trying to plan ahead! Thanks, Jan 🙂

Hi Jan, jeans would definitely be too hot! Most of us wore linen or light cotton and if we were visiting a temple etc, where arms or legs needed to be covered, we were either told beforehand or given a shawl/sarong etc to put on. We were also given disposable slippers to cover our feet. I wore shorts most of the time and was fine. Bring something bright to wear at the Taj, so you stand out in photos! For the evenings some folks dressed up a bit, nothing very flashy or glamorous, but the key is to be comfortable!

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi Jan,

I went to India this Feb/March and wore light cropped trousers most of the time. If you take clothes that can be washed and dried overnight that would be best - Craghoppers/Rohan etc. It is very cold first thing in the morning for the game drives and the Taj, so suggest you take a fleece or equivalent. For the evening, it is smart casual. Hope this helps. Enjoy, you will have a fantastic time! See my comments on staying healthy in India too.

Cheers, Hils

Before you go make sure that you watch the Judi Dench film - Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - and take a few tips about clothing from the ladies in the film. I went to India in April and it was very hot so loose cotton clothing is a must. Some ladies wore t shirts and vests but I took my collection of shirts and always felt comfortable and well covered. Long or 3/4 length pants are best - didn't see many Europeans in shorts. Smart, casual is the dress rule for the evening and if you want a few ideas about dressing for the Taj have a look at our group photo in the latest edition of the Page & Moy Discover magazine. Have a great holiday - it's a fabulous adventure.

Hello

In big Cities people dress like Westeners. March is towards the end of the winter season in India so it will still be a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings. Just take what you feel comfortable in, obviously not 'heavy' clothing. Have a great time.

To everyone who has replied to me, thank you very much for all the useful advice :)

To Shopper21, yes I am planning to watch the Marigold Hotel DVD, I have already bought it and just waiting till I have a spare couple of hours! I have also bought Slum Dog Millionnaire and the DVD of Caroline Quentin in India. Can't get enough at the moment!

I also took your advice and downloaded the Discover magazine and saw you guys in front of the Taj - fab photo! Can't wait to book up now!

Thanks again,

Jan

I went in March and opted for loose linen or cotton trousers and long tunic tops. Monsoon, Boden and Mantaray at Debenhams are good places to shop.

Bright colours are a great idea at the Taj Mahal.

Can any one advise is good flip flops would be suitable foot wear?

Not sure how much walking we have to do when visiting temples etc( obviously when on safari I need trainers )

I did purchase a pair of "walking sandals" which I tested out of a 4 day trip round Rome, but they made my feet SO hot they ached. (

Hi Alex

I wore a pair of "fit flops" when I did this tour. Also had a pair of trainers for tiger reserve visit and for climbing up to temples in Khajuraho.

Hope this helps.

Hi Alex,

I wore "trekking sandals" which are open but supportive (Merrell) or the protective toe ones (Keen). I too have to decide which I'm taking for Burma and Borneo!

Hope this helps!

Have a fantastic time - it is my all time favourite JY trip!

HI Hils,

Its was Keen open sandals that I bought, and closed toe ones (untested) and tried the open Sandal out on my trip to Rome in Sept, which made the soles of my feet SO hot,

I got a blister on my sole, so put one of those silver blister plasters on the next day- Which disintegrated from the heat of my foot? (blister did not hurt mind you), I thought to myself "oooh heck these wont do for India, that's £70 I cant get back"

Other than taking shoes off whilst on the coach, I thought I'd check with you seasoned travels if sturdy flip flops would work, my rational of thinking was in the temples you have to take your shoes off anyway.

When I'm on Tiger Safari I need to be able to run, I will have the fastest running shoes on. 🙂 Just in case- I need to chase a shy tiger for a cuddle (joking)

Its only 27 Sleep 4 hour & 28Mins to go...... but who's counting.

I knew I could rely on you & Hils to help me

Flit Flops was just the type of thing I had in mind...

They go with shirts, trousers & shorts(not sure I'll frighten the locals with me wearing shorts.....)

And my good only trainers for Khajuraho- Which I guess i can put on last min in the coach.

Sorry but another question has sprung up- Does the hand luggage get put in the coach hold whilst off visiting a sights? Not sure how all this touring stuff works?

Hi again

From memory, I only ever had a handbag with me when out and about. If you wanted to take hand luggage, this could be left on the coach as driver remained on board.

Hope you have a great holiday.

Hi Alex, there is a fair amount of walking on this tour so make sure you are comfortable walking in the flip flops! When we visit the various sights the coach is always locked or else the driver stays with it, so it is safe to leave valuables etc on your seat or the overhead shelf.

Have a great tour!

Hi,

Your hand luggage will normally be in your hotel, along with your case. You need to take a small rucksack or daybag with you when you visit the sights (this may well be your handluggage!) - you will need camera/spare batteries/water/suntan cream etc. etc. If you are going to sights on the way to another hotel, then your main luggage will be in the coach, and you can probably leave anything on the coach you don't want to cart around with you.

Re shorts - remember you can't wear them in temples etc - you have to have your knees covered, and probably your shoulders too, and it is always worth taking a scarf/shawl/pashmina with you, to be on the safe side.!

Cheers,

Hils

Hi Alex, thanks for raising the question regarding footwear. I have been pondering this question for a couple of weeks. Decided on a pair of Dudes for during the day and cotton traders lightweight slip on for flight and tigers. But that's today, tomorrow it maybe something different....lol.

Are you still going a day early, if so, see you in the bar for a birthday drink

I would welcome any advice from JY members on what to wear clothes wise on tiger hunt. Is it very cold in the morning or will a fleece suffice? Don't want my chattering teeth to scare them of.

Hi Jean on our tour we had three game drives in Ranthambore - two afternoon ones and one in the morning. I certainly wore shorts for the afternoon ones as it was hot - I remember this as I snagged them on the metal frame of the jeep as I climbed in! I don't remember it being very cold on the morning one - I think I just took a lightweight jacket but took it off quite early on.

Seeing a tiger in the wild was one of the best experiences of my life - I hope you are as lucky as we were!

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi Jean

I took a Iight weight pashmina with me and used it in the early mornings and evenings when it was cooler. However, I went to India in September and temperatures may be different when you go in February.

Thank you so much Lesley, Hils and Bob, for your valuable advice. If it wasn't for the weight restrictions I wouldn't be thinking about it. But as you suggested, we can always share the load with our hand luggage. Just a pity the internal flight is at the end of the holiday - cuts down on my shopping....lol

Alex and I will raise a glass or two to you over the holiday, especially if we see a tiger. I think that would make Alex's birthday.

Alex - thanks for the offer of a drink - look forward to meeting you soon.

Happy travelling!

Jean
