Does anyone know if I can take a backpack onto a BA flight instead of a wheeled cabin suitcase?  It is not particularly large, and is not framed.  It may even be able to under the seat in fron, not sure about this.

Yes you can.  BA's cabin bag requirements state 1 bag (56x45x25cms) plus 1 handbag/laptop bag (40x30x15cms) so as long as your backpack is within the size requirements you will be fine with it.

I've travelled quite often with a backback instead of a wheeled cabin suitcase and never had any problems.

I don’t see why you cannot take a back pack, I usually have a back pack as my hand luggage, BA should have a breakdown on size requirements so check the website, if you take a back pack you might not be able to take a handbag as well as hand luggage, I usually put that in my case for the evenings.

General consensus of opinion seems to be that it is possible.  With BA I usually take a suitcase for the hold, and also a handbag and wheeled suitcase on board.  You are right about the BA website, the backpack falls well within the cabin measurements, so I am coming round to the idea that it can be substituted for the wheeled suitcase I usually have.
