Thanks to Sarah, Roger and Angie for adding their comments about doing a land tour.  Good to hear reports from those who've done it before and all the positives.  I think that you can get fixated on the Rocky Mountaineer, it seems this is the most advertised and popular option so you're just unaware of the alternatives.  I was looking at Canada this September, but all the different Rocky Mountaineer trips were confusing - so I booked a cruise to the Baltics instead!

Hi Angie, SarahS and Roger,

Many thanks for your comments and confirming what I had been told!  I have now booked...

Looking forward to an exciting Canadian adventure and only a year and a half to wait!!

All the best,

Bob

Hi Bob,

I travelled this area way back in September 2004 - we had a hire car.

Hopefully you'll get to Moraine Lake which is off the road when you are going to Lake Louise.

At Maligne Lake we were walking around the shore when we realised we were being stalked by a moose in the woods. Must admit we legged it - they are massive.

We did whale watching out of Victoria and saw killer whales at close quarters.

Oh and we saw a bear in the hills around Vancouver.

Hi Katy,

Several people, including a couple of tour managers, have told me that although the Rocky Mountaineer is a great experience, that you generally see more wildlife and better views going by coach through that area.  Also this particular Trav tour (they do several including the train) has two days in Victoria including a whale watching excursion, which I really want to do (having had my whale watching excursion cancelled in Iceland, due to the weather!).  Finally the road option is the more flexible one if any problems arise apparently, due to the weather etc.  If you're interested in coming along, I'd love a travel buddy!

All the best,

Bob

I agree with Bob, did the Rockies by coach then a cruise up to Alaska with NCL. The beauty of the coach is that if you come across anything interesting it can stop, (for instance we came across moose just off the road). Also a lot of the route follows the railway especially down the Thompson River. It's a fantastic trip. Hope you can fit it in.

Regards. Roger

I did the “land tour” Vancouver and the Rockies, last autumn, including time in Vancouver and Victoria. By the way the whale watching on Victoria is actually orca watching, although interesting, not the same species as whales! I was surprised to learn, that The end of the is just outside of  Jasper. The rest of the journey, although very scenic, is through other national parks. I certainly don’t regret not doing the train. We spent two days in Whistler, well worthwhile, and not on the train itinary. The advantage of the road trip is a number of interesting detours from the highway. We visited a First Nations living museum, and one of the first hotels where stagecoach passangers stayed overnight. Even had the chance to ride on a stagecoach. For long stretches of the journey the highway is parallel to the rail tracks.  Each to his own, but I certainly don’t regret opting for a land tour
Hi Bob,

thanks for the background on this.  Had just been making the lazy assumption that the Rocky Mountaineer was the way to go, without realising there were other options.   Now turning my attention to 2019, having finally sorted out the rest of my holidays for 2018.  Will have a look at this now, seems there may be some advantages. And would be great to know another solo traveller if on a TS trip.

Regards

Katy

Hi Bob,

My apologies for my incorrect reply.

I have just found that 3 rooms have been reserved for single travelers on this tour, but we will offer more rooms to accommodate an increase of these travelers.

3 rooms are available on the departure date of 9 September 2019.

Kindest Regards,

Amy

Hi Bob,

Canada is on my list of possibles for next year too.  But just wondered why you picked a tour that doesn't include the Rocky Mountaineer?  Is the road tour better/what makes it preferable?  I know with TS you can add a couple of days in Vancouver, but you can usually do that with a JY tour even though it isn't advertised (remember folks adding days in Las Vegas and in Nashville on tours with JY).  Have seen various Canada/Rocky M trips with different tour groups, its very difficult to know which is the best to go for.

Katy
